Collin College Trustees Approve Installation of Air Cleaning Technology

June 24, 2020 – The Collin College Board of Trustees approved a plan on June 23 to move forward with installing air cleaning technologies at all 10 college facilities, which will virtually eliminate airborne contaminants.

The new technology abates allergens, odors, bacteria, viruses, mold, fungus, or dust mites in treated air space either through Ultraviolet (UV) type light technology or Bi-Polar Ionizers.  These systems will be incorporated into the college’s existing air handling systems.  The project is anticipated to cost approximately $3 million.

The college’s objective is to reduce the means by which viruses might spread at college facilities.  “We believe the use of these systems can add to the safety of our students, faculty, and staff, which is our highest priority,” said Dr. Neil Matkin, district president of Collin College.

The intent is to install these systems as rapidly as possible within the 2020-2021 academic year.  Once the engineering assessment is completed, the technology will be installed throughout Collin College’s facilities including the Frisco Campus (Preston Ridge), McKinney Campus (Central Park), Plano Campus (Spring Creek), Collin Higher Education Center in McKinney, the Courtyard Center in Plano, and the Public Safety Training Center in McKinney as well as campuses under construction in Allen, Celina, Farmersville, and Wylie.

Collin College serves more than 59,000 credit and continuing education students annually and offers more than 100 degrees and certificates, including new Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Bachelor of Applied Technology (BAT) in Cybersecurity degrees.
